Only When Voters Have No Colors Will Taiwan Move Out to a New Path

China Times Editorial (Taipei, Taiwan)

March 6, 2018

 Translation of an Excerpt

The Mainland announced 31 preferential measures for Taiwan, covering almost all areas, including industries, medicare, financial services, publishing, academic affairs, and film and television, letting the people of Taiwan enjoy national treatment. A Hong Kong media commentary believes that this is the Mainland's advance promulgation of post-reunification public policies.

Amid the Blue-Green confrontational thinking, Taiwan has nurtured a habit of discussions based on "stances but not right and wrong." Before people listen to another's opinions, they always scrutinize this person’s "colors"; they agree when he or she belongs to the same party, and attack when they do not. This not only has brought society into a vicious circle of blindness to reason and resorting to base emotions, but also causes the people's feelings to be endlessly torn apart. More importantly, the whole society has lost the momentum to move forward.

Politicians don’t see the perilous situation facing Taiwan, but the people of Taiwan cannot fail to see it. Everyone must be aware that time is not on Taiwan’s side; we may even say that following long-term spinning in place, there is simply not much time left for Taiwan to procrastinate and squander. If the chaotic phenomenon of "Blue and Green vicious fighting" is not immediately done away with, the perilous situation of decay and defeat for Taiwan will be right before our eyes.

When the DPP, NPP, KMT and New Party are added together, their memberships do not exceed 5% of the adult citizenry; it is not necessary for Taiwan to be hijacked again by the Blue and Green parties. Non-partisan citizens do not need to be called Blue or Green, they should cast their ballots to political figures who will allow the people of Taiwan to lead a better life, who can stabilize cross-Strait relations, so that Taiwan can move out from the quagmire of Blue-Green vicious fighting and move on to a new path.
