Cross-Strait Views of Ko Wen-je & Han Kuo-yu Are More Pragmatic than Tsai Ing-wen’s

 Translation of an Excerpt

Following the scout skirmish for the 2020 Presidential electoral campaign, "Xi Jinping’s five points" talk, stressing the peaceful reunification direction, ignited a new debate on cross-Strait policies; two Internet star celebrities mentioned as possible Presidential candidates-- Taipei City Mayor Ko Wen-je’s and Kaohsiung City Mayor Han Kuo-yu’s cross-Strait views have gradually emerged in general outlines. Ko and Han position themselves in a cross-Strait status quo of dynamic equilibrium using cross-Strait peace as longitude and people's livelihood and mutual benefit as latitude, hoping to strive for an outlet for Taiwan; this could be called a new pragmatism.

Ko Wen-je believes "only the benevolent can serve the small state as a big one, and only the wise can serve the big state as a small one," reminding the DPP authorities: "In the next 15 years, the China-US confrontation will be the big picture in the international situation; if Taiwan wants to ponder how to survive in the cleavage, when we engage in friendly exchanges with one party, we have to watch the other party”; this is a pragmatic and accurate judgment.

Zeroing in on “Xi’s five points,” Han Kuo-yu uses “two unquestionables” to remind the DPP government not to question the CCP’s determination to recover Taiwan, and to remind the Beijing authorities not to question the determination of Taiwan people to pursue freedom and democracy. When answering queries of a Japanese media outlet, Han Kuo-yu referred to, "If one does not love the Republic of China, and Taiwan does not dare to declare independence, nor does it want the 1992 Consensus, may I ask President Tsai, whither the 23 million will go?" He urged the ruling authorities, let’s all ardently love the Republic of China, and in cross-Strait exchanges, use the 1992 Consensus, one China, different interpretations as the basis for exchanges and as the fundamental policy, so that we all could lead a better life.

The reason that Ko and Han have become Internet super celebrities and won cross-party support is that they do not stress ideology, but realistically face reality, hoping to solve problems rather than create problems, basing everything on the people’s welfare. When facing cross-Strait squabbling, Ko and Han both strived for an outlet for Taiwan with all efforts. Sandwiched between the Blue and Green, Ko Wen-je uses “the two sides of the Strait are like family” to continue the Twin Cities Forum. Han Kuo-yu, in Green-color southern Taiwan, uses “shipping goods out, letting people come in, Kaohsiung becomes greatly prosperous” and “politics zero percent, economics one hundred percent” to transcend Blue and Green, after taking office, he immediately acted to prove that his concept was workable. Both have demonstrated that cross-Strait relations are not only wasting time in internecine bickerings, not only fighting till both being wounded; conversely, it could possibly lead to cooperation and win-win situations.
