Countering the Onslaught of the Han Kuo-yu Vogue, the DPP Has Saved its Last Breath

United Daily News Editorial (Taipei, Taiwan)

 Translation of an Excerpt

Although it was only four by-elections for legislative seats, the elections on the 16th, however, were elevated to a super-scale showdown between the Blue and Green. Under the forceful push of the "Han Kuo-yu vogue," the DPP mobilized all party and government high-echelons to do battle, and in the end, it saved its two seats with a scare. The two seats in Madou District of Tainan City and Sanchung District of New Taipei City did not change hands, but the deep areas that the Green camp had for long laid a solid foundation has now been strongly rocked. Viewed from the tug-of-war during the campaign, the DPP must have been deeply alerted.

If someone compares these by-elections as a "rehearsal" of the presidential election next year, it probably does not meet with the principle of proportionality; after all, the four legislative seats only have a tenure of ten months. However, like the elections of last yearend, the impact and rocking on the Green camp strongholds are the atmospherics that the people could have sensed in the streets. Especially, Madou and Sanchung are both the DPP’s traditional "dyed in the wool" strongholds; this time, under the all-out mobilization involving the Presidential Palace, the Cabinet and the party, the DPP did its best, but only gained a superiority of a few thousands votes. The force that the vox populi in Taiwan is longing for change can clearly be seen.

Although Hsieh Lung-chieh and Zheng Shi-wei failed to make turn-overs in Tainan and New Taipei City, it was an eye-opener that in so short a period, they could achieve such a narrow margin. Especially in Tainan, since 2008 when legislative elections adopted a single constituency system, no KMT members have been elected in Tainan. Tainan City Mayor Huang Wei-cher three years ago was elected to the Legislative Yuan with an overwhelming seventy-six percent of the vote; for this reason, the Green camp had the audacity to say that "even if a watermelon were nominated, it would be elected." This time, Hsieh Lung-chieh entered the race from a different district, and in a short period of time, was trailing behind by only three thousand votes. This also broke the “curse that the Blue camp is afraid of battle in Tainan.” Starting from this newly established beachhead, if the Blue camp actively deploys, it will have a chance to make gains next year and rewrite the shameful record of zero seats from Tainan in the Legislative Yuan.

Taking a step further, in order to stabilize its electoral prospects, the Tsai government not only was oblivious to the ardent hope of the people for "striving for the economy," but also stepped across the red line, playing the anti-China “threat card” and "national security card"; all these moves have violated its pledge for democracy and progress. These risky moves perhaps can help the DPP to stabilize its electoral prospects for some time, but accumulated in the long run, it will inevitably all the more expose its incompetence, thereby eliciting a greater backlash of the vox populi. The DPP this time has kept the last breath in the deep Green turf, but how long will it last?
