Does the DPP Want to Continue to Look at the World through a Keyhole?

United Daily News Editorial (Taipei, Taiwan)

March 28, 2019

 Translation of an Excerpt

Kaohsiung City Mayor Han Kuo-yu toured Hong Kong, Macao, Shenzhen, and Xiamen, securing export orders for Taiwan’s farmers and fishermen worth a total of NT$5.2 billion, achieving very productive results. However, the DPP is totally oblivious to his efforts striving for the economy, rather it bombarded him all the way for his meeting with PRC officials, not only claiming to penalize him, but also planning to add a "Han Kuo-yu clause" in order to further restrict the control of local government chiefs during their visits to Hong Kong and Macao. The DPP's approach not only revealed its narrow vista and mentality of "looking at the world through a keyhole", but also exposed its feebleness of inability to rule the country, leaving only tactics of threats.

The Mainland Affairs Council has claimed that it would impose a fine of NT$500,000 on Han Kuo-yu for violating the "Statute Governing Relations of People Across the Strait"; it not only "trumped up charges" but is also tantamount to "using tomorrow's law to punish yesterday's behavior." Two events of Han Kuo-yu’s tour this time have become a target of the DPP’s accusations: First, he met with Wang Zhimin and Fu Ziying, directors of the Liaison Offices of the Central People's Government in Hong Kong and Macao, respectively. The second is he met with Liu Jieyi, director of the Taiwan Affairs Office (under the State Council), in Shenzhen. However, what serious crimes did Han Kuo-yu commit after all?

There is a famous saying about "looking at the skies sitting at the bottom of a well"; for the DPP, it went a step even further, observing the world through a keyhole behind self-imprisonment. Even this is not enough; it is also teaching the public that they must imagine Taiwan’s relations with the outside world from the same keyhole, while endlessly exposing its own contradictions. The reason that we say the DPP "is looking at the world through a keyhole" is that for a long period of time, it has been stuck in its Taiwan independence, anti-China totem, while completely disregarding Taiwan’s development. Taking the example of Han Kuo-yu’s tour this time. What is worthy of our countrymen’s attention is the spectacular changes in the cities in the past one or two decades on his itinerary. The Tsai government has refused to look squarely at the changes across the Strait, nor does it want the people in Taiwan to understand these facts, only being able to level accusations and criticisms trying to erase Han Kuo-yu’s visit; is this not "looking at the world through a keyhole"?

The fiercer the DPP’s bombardment on Han Kuo-yu, the more it exposes its own diffidence, and the more it helps to grow Han Kuo-yu’s reputation and momentum. Therefore, please do whatever you can to level trumped-up charges and mete out penalties, and please continue to debase yourself beyond redemption!
