"Progress" Always at the Time of General Election Campaigns: Which Side Will the Third Force Help?

United Daily News Editorial (Taipei, Taiwan)

 Translation of an Excerpt

The presidential primaries for the Blue and Green camps have produced their respective candidates; after that, all have to wait and see in what capacity Ko Wen-je, who has been practicing in the dug-out for a long time, will join the game. Could Ko Wen-je, the self-styled "third force," propose a prescription that transcends the Blue and Green after pondering for a long time?

After the DPP’s primary, Tsai Ing-wen strived to mend the rifts in the pan-Green camp, actively calling back friendly forces, utilizing anti-China as a campaign axis and resources of the state to integrate the hordes. Lin Fei-fan, a leader of the Sunflower Student Movement, bade farewell to the "Little Green" New Power Party (NPP), joining the DPP as its Deputy Secretary-General. Forsaking the NPP, Lin Fei-fan parachuted to the DPP, on the one hand, for the bandwagon effect, and on the other being persuaded by Lo Wen-jia that the "DPP was still the greatest anti-China force.” The DPP, including Tsai Ing-wen, stressed that it is necessary to seek younger people to join the party; the DPP wants to continue to communicate with society. Both show that the arrangement for Lin Fei-fan centered around Tsai Ing-wen’s thinking of seeking the momentum of the anti-Cross-Strait Services Movement, calling back the younger generation that has been disappointed with the DPP’s governance, as Hong Kong's anti-China movement continues, coupled with the fact that in the second half of the year the CCP will up the ante in opposing Taiwan independence, the DPP uses the anti-China movement by the younger generation to pep up its electoral prospects; this is a focus of attention.

The third force, which rose on the political scene four years ago following the Sunflower Student Movement was partially co-opted by Tsai Ing-wen, and some became followers of Ko Wen-je, who will be potential rivals for the Blue and Green camps in next year’s general elections. Miao Tien (a buddhist sect leader) plans to organize a "parliamentary party alliance", attempting to join hands with Ko Wen-je; the People’s First Party, a long-term supporter of Ko Wen-je, a couple of days ago also leaked the wind direction of a "Ko Wen-je-James Song ticket", even at one time spreading a version of "Terry Guo-Ko Wen-je ticket." This shows that the third force has various possible imaginary combinations.

How the KMT party central and Han Kuo-yu are going to mend the seizures and accelerate integration and division of labor, will greatly affect the electoral prospects. Once the Blue camp is divided, leading to the partition and nibbling of the third or even fourth forces, the image of a Blue camp incessantly mired in struggles for power, it will inevitably lose the trust of the electorate. When the forces in opposition fight for ballots, they would most likely help the DPP’s electoral prospects for the presidential and legislative races, which would make the looming one-party rule and the cross-Strait hostile path become a long-term phenomenon.

While both being wounded in the primaries, the DPP utilized the "third force" to stem divisions, as if it had gladly picked up a gun, and looking back at the KMT, however, it could probably have been stabbed from behind by the third force. Han Kuo-yu has relied on Han fans to achieve wins in smooth sailing; he too must open up himself to become the platform for the greatest majority, leading the forces dissatisfied with the DPP toward solidarity; only by doing so could he effectively debunk the lies of the Green camp’s "progressive values", defeating Tsai Ing-wen, who relies on the backing of external forces.
