Only by Removing Tsai Ing-wen from Office Can We Rectify and Reinstate Guidelines for High School History Textbooks

China Times Editorial (Taipei, Taiwan)

August 12, 2019

 Translation of an Excerpt

With the new school year starting in August, regarding the new guidelines on high school history textbooks, from the Nan I Book Enterprise Co. edition to the Longteng Cultural Co. edition, appeared one after the other, the so-called "unsettled issue of sovereignty over Taiwan"; it is both shocking and heart-strickening. This move not only contravenes the mainstay academic views, but also ignores the juridical facts of the Cairo Declaration and three other historical documents, and even underscoring the DPP government’s attempt to twist national identity; wanting to declare independence, yet it does not dare to do so, the DPP, however, through history textbooks, undertakes the “open conspiracy” tactic for political brainwashing.

"Taiwan's sovereignty belongs to the Republic of China"; the jurisprudential evidence of this historical fact, in actuality, is already extremely sufficient. From the Cairo Declaration of November 1943, the Potsdam Proclamation of July 1945, to the “Instrument of Surrender” of the Japanese Emperor of August 1945, the "San Francisco Peace Treaty" of 1951, to the "Peace Treaty between the Republic of China and Japan" of 1952, they all contain clear, rational factual logic, while data are also quite substantive and sufficient; a simple check will do.

A blind spot should not be allowed to befuddle and must be delineated; historical education is not entirely equal to "historical studies"; the foundation of education of a nation lies in elementary and secondary schools; our sages said, "If you want to annihilate a state, you must annihilate its history." The foundation of education on a nation’s history is closely knit with the destiny of a nation’s survival or demise. Students of a nation’s history education of course may have pluralistic, open thinking, debate and discussions; however, the correct historical perception and national identity are the most important. The righteous and bright history education of a nation advocates that "Taiwan belongs to the Republic of China", which is beyond any doubt; otherwise, the state will definitely be a non-state, and the jurisprudential legitimacy of the government will also vanish!

When Tsai Ing-wen served as the chairperson of the DPP at a time when it was in the opposition, she publicly proposed the viewpoint that the Republic of China’s rule over Taiwan was a "government in exile"; now she has become the chief of state of what she used to call an "exile government." At present, she is using the unconstitutional title "Republic of China Taiwan" to call "this country"; added to the fact that she incorporated "the issue of the unsettled status of Taiwan" in the history textbooks for national education... After all, what is the logic of cause and effect between do we want or not want [Taiwan independence], do we determine or not determine [the status of sovereignty over Taiwan] ? This situation could not be described by a simple word of chaotic alone!

The people must ponder in angst after pain, with extra prudence and fear in the 2020 presidential election, strive for the correct national history education of young students in Taiwan, and for the grand and macro view of history in order to win, pro-actively guide the state to the right track!
