Sweep the CCP Agents Clause into the Trash Bin

China Times Editorial (Taipei, Taiwan)

August 14, 2019

 Translation of an Excerpt

Being obstinate with goodness is a virtue, while with evil, it’s stupidity. The "CCP agents clause", from its inception and jurisprudence to execution, would be wrong, full of loopholes, and ridiculous as well as horrible to the extreme. It would not only fail to safeguard Taiwan's democracy as it claimed but also rock the foundation for democracy, harming the rights and benefits of freedom. If it were rammed through, it would inevitably sow the seeds for the poisonous fruit of divide and rupture for Taiwan’s society. Rather than spending its energy in the six months leading to the presidential election on this vicious and poisonous clause, it would be better for the Tsai government to reign in the horse on the cliff of a deep abyss, sweeping it into a trash bin, in order to stop a political storm.

The "CCP agents clause" seems to be a roll of barbed wire covering from head down the entire Taiwan society; the people, who originally could freely move about, suddenly found that they could be at any time ensnared in trumped up charges, ending in bloodshed. Currently, the "Lobbying Act", the "Public Officials Election and Recall Act" and the "Political Contributions Act" all ban the Mainland from commissioning lobbying or making political contributions; the addition of a "CCP agents clause" would be totally unnecessary.

If the Tsai government railroaded the passage of the "CCP agents clause" and used it to pursue for a kill everywhere, the end result would inevitably be injustice felt by the victims, while others being frightened and horrified, causing social turmoil and unease all around. This sword of Damocles hanging over everyone's head, on the one hand, creates a chilling effect, and on the other, would bring about more radical backlashes and conflicts; our homeland, on which we pride ourselves on freedom and democracy, would encounter unprecedented harm.

In fact, only less than six months remain before the general elections next January. The "CCP agents clause" is like a Pandora's box, once opened, it would arouse more and more far-reaching chaos and conflicts, leaving the country and society with injuries and no benefits. When the bill is being reviewed in the Legislative Yuan, it will inevitably be a fierce battle, paying incalculable social costs. Since President Tsai bragged of being the defender of Taiwan's democracy, she should more prudently consider the interests of the entire country, applying the brakes in time; this would be a move to safeguard Taiwan's democracy.
