Does Terry Gou Want to Abandon the Victors League and Organize an Avengers League?

United Daily News Editorial (Taipei, Taiwan)

 Translation of an Excerpt

The tendency that Foxconn founder Terry Gou is preparing to run for president as an independent candidate has become more and more obvious; a KMT legislator is pushing for Kaohsiung City Mayor Han Kuo-yu to team up with former New Taipei City mayor Eric Chu in a “Han-Chu ticket”, hoping to recoup the KMT’s declining posture; Eric Chu says that he will definitely be stumping for the KMT, and has from the beginning insisted on persevering in his original motivation—solidarity and victory, saying that what the KMT needs is for everyone to put down his or her individualism with an eye to the big picture.

Now the international situation has encountered a sea change; the US and China are engaging in bitter fights, placing Taiwan in a perilous state. The presidential race this time is not a question of win or loss for the Blue or Green, but a battle over the paths between "friendly to China, saving Taiwan" and "anti-China, inclining to independence." In last year's local elections, with the rise of the Han Kuo-yu vogue, the pendulum swung to "friendly to China, saving Taiwan." This year, Xi Jinping’s statement on "the Taiwan program for one country, two systems” and Hong Kong's opposition to the repatriation amendment bill to the “Fugitive Offenders Ordinance” have allowed the Tsai government to pick up guns, plus the fact that the "friendly to China, saving Taiwan" camp split, leading to a sudden change in the electoral campaign. However, the final crux of the matter lies in Terry Gou’s thinking in a fleeting moment: Terry Gou wants to maintain his reputation of the "Republic of China faction", consolidating the path of the "friendly to China, saving Taiwan", or because the tycoon’s character of absolutely refusing to admit loss, would rather see a piece of precious jade smashed than having a tile intact. This will not only determine Gou’s personal historical assessment, but also tremendously impact the trend for the country; Terry Gou must of course be prudent.

Wu Den-yih and Han Kou-yu must, for the path of "friendly to China, saving Taiwan" and for the future of the KMT and the Republic of China, exhaust all efforts to change the big picture; win or loss for an individual is a small matter, but the future of the country is extremely important. Terry Gou ought to come out of his self-made cacoon of obstinacy; this moment should be, as Eric Chu says, "Success need not be me, but success will definitely include me." At the very beginning, the morale of the "victors league" could shape the big picture, putting people at ease; forsaking this, if one has to organize an "avengers league", then as a Confucius saying goes, “If the name is not rectified, then the rhetoric is not convincing”, and much ado for helping others, then what’s that for?
