Han Kuo-yu’s Stance on Terry Gou Should Be Hardened

China Times Editorial (Taipei, Taiwan)

 Translation of an Excerpt

Terry Gou, who had lost the KMT primary, Ko Wen-je, Chairman of the Taiwan People’s Party, and others actively engaged in secret meetings, readying themselves to announce their presidential bid during the Mid-Autumn Festival holiday. Terry Gou has absolutely no legitimacy to enter the presidential race in violation of KMT party discipline. He entered the KMT primary with great fanfare, but being a poor sport, surprisingly reneged on his pledge, entering the race in violation of party discipline; this shows that he has no credibility or character to speak of.

The most crucial issue facing Taiwan is no greater than cross-Strait relations; on this core issue, Terry Gou has advocated that the two sides of the Strait must maintain peace, and peace must have a consensus; therefore, we must have the “Consensus of 1992, one China, different interpretations.” Ko Wen-je, on the other hand, has often said that we cannot consider the 1992 Consensus as the core thinking; in the future, will Terry Gou accept the 1992 Consensus? However, if diametrically opposed on the core issue, but the duo still reluctantly wants to cooperate, then that would be a betrayal of principles, putting power in the middle, leaving on the sides ideals and values.

Now that Terry Gou has stepped on the road detrimental to the Republic of China, Han Kuo-yu should not be further entangled by "love and inclusiveness", but should sound the bugle for attack, unveiling and lambasting his disloyalty in betraying principles and colluding in destroying the Republic of China. Terry Gou, in coalescing with external forces to weaken the forces safeguarding the Republic of China, may help Tsai Ing-wen, who wholeheartedly wants to annihilate the Republic of China; naturally, he should be seriously condemned. On this crucial issue, no space exists for fuzziness, nor room for love and inclusiveness.

The people in Taiwan are generally worried about the future; the majority feels perplexed. Han Kuo-yu is presidential candidate with lofty ambitions; he must draw a path, leading the people to break the “sense of the nation’s demise”, charting a royal road before our eyes, i.e., “when cross-Strait relations are good, Taiwan will be good, with an open mind, discuss the country’s future and the steps acceptable to the people.”
