Triple Coupons Not Easy to Use, Not Stimulating, But Very Penny-Pinching

China Times Editorial (Taipei, Taiwan)

 Translation of an Excerpt

In order to stimulate consumption and revitalize the economy, the "Revitalization Coupons", being promoted amid repeated expectations, were finally scheduled to be launched on July 15. Each person pays NT$1,000 in cash for coupons valued at NT$3,000, thus they were renamed "Revitalization Three Times Coupons." Premier Su, like a watermelon vendor, brags about his wares, believing that the three times coupons are "three easy and one warm": "easy to get, easy to use, truly stimulating, and very warm". However, from the perspective of small shops and grassroots folks, it feels like "three no and one penny-pinching": “not easy to get, not easy to use, not stimulating, and the most penny-pinching".

For the grassroots folks who are jobless or furloughed because of this wave of the pandemic, the NT$2,000 subsidy is like meager wages, which can only be said to be better than nothing. Facing such a mean and narrow-minded government that looked high-spirited and proud, the truly disadvantaged grassroots are in a pitiful situation.

The "Three Times Coupons" have a limited effect for economic revitalization, nor could they help the people in real difficulties. We call on the government to target the jobless and furloughed people who bear the greatest impact to provide a subsidy of NT$20,000 at a minimum. They will never "forget" to consume, but could achieve better results with the stimulus of this consumption and society would become more stable, right?
