The KMT Party Platform Revision Committee, which was convened by KMT Vice Chairman Hau Lung-bin (郝龍斌), has recently completed the task of drafting a proposal for the revision of the KMT’s party platform.
According to the proposal, the KMT plans to include in its planned party platform revision the phrase “upholding the Constitution of the Republic of China and consolidating the 1992 Consensus (堅守中華民國憲法,鞏固九二共識)"as a core tenant in the party’s cross-Strait policies in order to defend Taiwan’s dignity in parity and maintain everlasting peace across the Taiwan Strait.
The proposal is expected to be adopted by the KMT National Party Congress scheduled for July 19th, according to media reports.
According to KMT party rules, one of the functions for the KMT National Party Congress is to “decide the party’s platform.” Its party platform will normally be revised every four years. The current KMT party platform was adopted at the 19th National Party Congress in 2013. Since Eric Chu (朱立倫) assumed the KMT chairmanship in January, the party central has begun the task of revising the party platform as part of Chu’s efforts to promote party reforms.
The current party platform states that the party should strive to put into practice the Five-Point Consensus reached at the meeting between the KMT’s Lien Chan (連戰) and the CCP’s Hu Jintao in 2005, continue to push for cross-Strait exchanges and promote everlasting peace across the Taiwan Strait. However, the phrase “upholding the Constitution of the Republic of China and consolidating the 1992 Consensus” was added to the proposed party platform this time in order to defend Taiwan’s dignity in parity.
KMT party delegates have received copies of the proposal for the newly revised party platform, according to media reports. Party delegates may present their opinions before the party platform draft is finalized, which will then be referred to the National Party Congress for approval.
