January 21, 2020

The KMT is slated to hold a by-election for the KMT chairmanship on March 7. Former KMT vice chairman Hao Lung-pin (郝龍斌) announced yesterday that he would run for KMT chairmanship, making “two full commitments” and proposing “three main directions” for reform.

Hao stated that if elected, he would pledge to lay aside his individual political plans in the future year, fully committing himself to assisting the party to weather the unprecedented crisis and galvanize solidarity within the party. Hao went on to state that he would also fully commit himself to finding and helping the person who could lead the KMT to return to power, and cultivating young prospective leaders.

The “three main directions” proposed by Hao included fully conforming to public opinion, passing the torch to young party members, and mapping out a new course in line with the current international situation and public opinion, especially in cross-Strait relations.

Chang Ya-chung (張亞中), principal of the Sun Yat-sen School, announced his run for KMT chairmanship on January 13. However, because Chang had never served as a member on the KMT Central Committee or Central Advisory Committee, he was not eligible to run in the by-election. Therefore, Hao became the first qualified candidate who expressed his intention to run in the by-election.
