The US State Department approved arms sales to Taiwan on July 10, re-qualifying and testing Taiwan’s Patriot Advanced Capability-3 air defense missiles at a cost of US$620 million (around NT$18.2 billion). However, according to a media outlet, owing to operational negligence of the Air Force, military high echelons responsible for the approval of arms procurement such as Defense Minister Yen De-fa (嚴德發) had had no prior knowledge of the matter.
The Ministry of National Defense (MND) responded yesterday by indicating that the Air Force had failed to comply with statutory procedures, and that the MND would formulate regulatory measures to prevent repetitions of similar situations in the future. Furthermore, the Air Force Headquarters indicated last night that in regard to related negligence, the Air Force had reviewed the commanding officer of the case, and that Lt Gen. Liu Feng-yu (劉峯瑜), Director of the Air Defense and Missile Command, would be disciplined.
