In a press conference yesterday, the KMT exposed a telegram sent in 2017 by the Taipei Economic and Trade Office (TETO) in Indonesia to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), indicating that John Chen (陳忠), the ROC’s representative to Indonesia, had explained in 2017 to Wang Mei-hua (王美花), the then Deputy Economics Minister, that “middlemen seem to have taken control of the state-owned enterprises, allowing themselves to pursue personal gains by bypassing the relevant ministries and the mechanisms of ROC overseas missions.”
The KMT went on to accuse Su Jia-chyuan (蘇嘉全), now secretary-general to the President, and his nephew, DPP legislator Su Chen-ching (蘇震清), of allegedly being involved in the matter when the elder Su was still Legislative Speaker.
Yu Shu-hui (游淑慧), a Taipei City councilwoman, of KMT affiliation, stated that according to the telegram, the younger Su had visited Indonesia in August 2017 along with high-echelon executives of several state-owned enterprises, privately meeting with top officials of the Indonesian government, including Muhammad Jusuf Kalla, the then Vice President of Indonesia, without prior notifications to the MOFA or the Economics Ministry in Taiwan. Yu went on to add that one month later, the uncle and nephew had visited Indonesia together and refused assistance offered by the TETO there.
The KMT pointed out that the telegram had been classified as “confidential,” but was declassified at the end of 2019.
Yesterday, the MOFA stated that after checking, no travel records were found showing that the duo had visited Indonesia in 2017. The KMT demanded that the MOFA answer whether or not the telegram indeed existed, adding that if the answer was yes, the MOFA was asked to make public the telegram to clarify the year when the two Sus went to Indonesia.
