Ma Urges Tsai to Visit Taiping Island in Person for Safeguarding Sovereignty

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo issued a statement on July 13^th, denying Mainland China’s claims in relation to the South China Sea. Yesterday, former President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) stated that this was the clearest position the US had ever made on the South China Sea dispute. According to Ma, this indicates that the US agrees with the Permanent Court of Arbitration’s [not the International Court of Justice] position that Taiping Island was a reef instead of an island.

Ma said that “President Tsai should openly state that Taiping Island is an island, not a reef, and emphasize that it is ROC territory.” He called on Tsai to visit Taiping Island in person to show the international community our determination to safeguard sovereignty.
