Regarding Plagiarism Controversy, Li Mei-jhen, KMT Mayoral Candidate for Kaohsiung, Apologizes

Li Mei-jhen (李眉蓁), the KMT candidate in the Kaohsiung City mayoral by-election, was for several days caught in a tempest regarding plagiarism in her Master’s thesis. Yesterday, she was weeping while apologizing, indicating that she would still fight in the by-election until the last moment.

Li stated that she deeply regretted that her thesis had elicited discussions, shifting the focus of the by-election campaign away. She also extended an apology for causing a controversy over academic research ethics owing to her personal negligence. To prevent the matter from further disturbing society, she said, she decided to renounce her Master’s degree from an in-service Master’s program of National Sun Yat-sen University.
