353 Manufacturing Firms Furlough Employees, Highest Since COVID-19 Outbreak

On July 24, the Ministry of Labor (MOL) made public the latest statistics on unpaid leave, showing that as of July 23, the number of firms introducing unpaid leave reached 1,049, affecting 25,208 employees, an increase of 75 firms and 1,601 employees compared with the figures as of July 16. According to the statistics, among the 1,049 firms, 353 came from the manufacturing sector, affecting 16,517 employees, the highest since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
An MOL official indicated that although the pandemic was petering out in Taiwan, it was still severe overseas. The official went on to state that impacted by city lockdowns overseas, export-orientated firms in the manufacturing sector had received few orders.
