In March 2016, the Taipei Women's Rescue Foundation founded the Ama Museum dedicated to the so-called “comfort women” in Taiwan during World War II, attracting much attention from various circles at the time. However, five years later, as the museum cannot afford its rent with the revenue of admission tickets and declining donations in fundraising campaigns, the first and only museum in Taiwan under the theme of the euphemistically-named “comfort women” is slated to close down in November.
Tu Ying-chiu (杜瑛秋), deputy CEO of the Taipei Women's Rescue Foundation, stated that one of the reasons for declining donations was the fact that there was much less public concern about the issue of “comfort women” in Taiwan.
A news analysis carried by the United Daily News pointed out that during World War II, approximately 1,200 females in Taiwan had been forced to work as “comfort women” for the Japanese army. According to the news analysis, many political figures in Taiwan stated that the history about “comfort women” should be faced squarely. Unfortunately, the transformational justice and human rights pursued by the ruling DPP administration never touched on this issue.
