In order to expand sources of students for higher education, the Education Ministry declared yesterday its plan to study and map out three measures to attract overseas Chinese and foreign students to study in Taiwan as follows:
1) Establish a mechanism for overseas Chinese and foreign students granted admission by colleges in Taiwan to take a one or two-year program of Chinese language classes before starting degree programs.
2) Ease regulations for overseas Chinese and foreign students taking part-time jobs in Taiwan in order to reduce their financial pressure.
3) Assist overseas Chinese and foreign students in securing permanent residency in Taiwan after graduation.
However, Mainland students would not be eligible for the three measures proposed by the Education Ministry. Some colleges pointed out that “an education policy ought not to exclude any specific group,” opining that no discrimination should be made against Mainland students, or the cross-Strait goodwill accumulated by education exchanges in the past would evaporate into the thin air.
