Chen Chih-chung, son of former President Chen Shui-bian, was stripped of elective office as a Kaohsiung City councilman in accordance with the law after being convicted on August 17 of perjury in a corruption case involving the President’s State Affairs Fund and sentenced to three months in prison without probation. Yesterday, the Kaohsiung District Prosecutors Office granted his petition to perform community service in lieu of jail time, and would recommend suitable institutions to Chen within two to five days.

Huang Tsai-hsiu, one of the head prosecutors at the Kaohsiung District Prosecutors Office, said that the Prosecutors Office would treat him as an ordinary convict, and handle his case according to normal procedures.

Huang stated that she was considering having Chen Chih-chung disseminate legal knowledge to inmates and juveniles in the Kaohsiung Prison, Ta-liao Care Center, and the Ming Yang High School for Juveniles. The standard workload was about eight hours a day, but Chen had the final word, Huang added.

In accordance with existing laws and regulations, six hours of community service can replace one day in jail, with a maximum of twelve hours per day. If Chen worked eight hours per day, he would complete the community service in 68 days. Should he do so, he would be able to meet the registration deadline for the legislative elections, November 25.
