The Taiwanese Association for Pacific Ocean Development (TAPOD) released the results of its latest opinion poll on October 2.  According to the poll, 33.6% of the respondents support President Ma Ying-jeou, 29.8% Tsai Ing-wen, and 11.5% James Soong, giving President Ma a 3.8% lead over Tsai Ing-wen.  If James Soong does not run in the 2012 Presidential election, 43.2% of the respondents said they would support President Ma and 35.9% Tsai Ing-wen, giving President Ma a 7.3% lead over Tsai Ing-wen.

As to approval ratings, the poll shows that 45.8% of the respondents stated that they were satisfied with President Ma’s performance over the past three years, and 44.6% dissatisfied.  When asked whether they believed that Tsai Ing-wen could do a good job as President, 45.4% of the respondents answered yes and 35.2% no.  The poll also indicates that 31.3% of the respondents were worried about Taiwan’s future if Tsai Ing-wen were to be elected President, 23% President Ma, and 13% James Soong.

The latest poll was conducted between September 26 and 28 with 1,623 people surveyed. The margin of error associated with this sample is plus or minus 2.43 % with a 95 % confidence interval.

After the DPP came to power in 2000, TAPOD chairman You Ying-lung served as deputy chairman of the Research, Development and Evaluation Commission, DPP deputy secretary-general, deputy chairman of the Mainland Affairs Council, and deputy chairman and secretary-general of the Straits Exchange Foundation.
