The KMT maintained its legislative majority in the 2012 legislative elections by winning 64 seats out of the total 113, including 48 district and 16 party-list seats. The DPP won a total of 43 seats, including 27 district and 13 party-list seats.
Surprisingly, Chiu Yi (邱毅), a high-profile KMT legislator, lost to his DPP opponent Chao Tien-Lin (趙天麟) in Lingya District (Kaohsiung 7).
Lin Yi-shih(林益世), KMT party whip and four-term legislator representing Gangshan District (Kaohsiung 2), was defeated by DPP's Chiu Chih-wei (邱志偉), a former Civil Affairs Bureau Director in the Kaohsiung City Government.
In addition, Chen Chi-chung (陳致中), son of former President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁), ran for election in Xiaogang, Qianzhen District (Kaohsiung 9), but he and the DPP's Kuo Wen-cheng (郭玟成) were both ultimately defeated by the KMT's Lin Kuo-chen (林國正), with 38.4% of the vote.
[Editor's Note: Our legislative elections have adopted a "single-seat district, two-ballot" electoral system. Voters cast two ballots, one for the candidate they support (regional), and the other for the political party they support (at large).]
