New Cabinet Formally Announced
Sources: All Taipei newspapers
January 31, 2012
Following an extraordinary meeting of the Executive Yuan (Cabinet) this morning, Premier Wu Den-yih and his cabinet resigned en masse. The Presidential Office this afternoon announced in a press release the appointment of Sean Chen (陳沖) as new Premier. Chen immediately held a press conference to announce his cabinet lineup, who were expected to be sworn in on February 6.
Chung-Ming Kuan (管中閔), an academician in the Academia Sinica who once served as a member of the Presidential financial and economic advisory group, has been appointed as a minister of state without portfolio. His appointment is another shot of new blood of financial and economic expertise into the new cabinet.
In addition, Dr. Wei-Ling Chiang (蔣偉寧), President of National Central University, will take over the Education Ministry. Chen Bao-ji (陳保基), a professor and former Dean of the College of Bioresources and Agriculture at National Taiwan University, has been appointed chairman of the Council of Agriculture.
Tsai Huang-liang, DPP caucus whip, needled the new cabinet as “old wine in an old bottle” because he saw no new faces in the lineup, adding that such a cabinet reshuffle was a great failure and exposed President Ma Ying-jeou’s embarrassment at being unable to recruit new talents for the new cabinet.
However, the business sector gave the new cabinet appointments a positive assessment. Acer Inc. (宏碁) founder Stan Shih praised that new cabinet members were excellent choices, and called on the public to give them encouragement and room to exercise their talents. Joseph Tsai, chairman of the First Financial Holdings Co., also stated that the new cabinet members were extremely familiar with the financial services industry and markets, which would benefit from the new Cabinet’s “pragmatic” financial policies in the future.
