"The Eighth Asia Pacific and Middle East Regional Conference of the International Association of Prosecutors" was held from April 17-18. In the opening ceremony, Justice Minister Tseng Yung-fu (曾勇夫) stated, "only through cross border coordination can we effectively stop crime, which has become more globalized and systematic.”
The opening ceremony was jointly chaired by James Hamilton, the President of the International Association of Prosecutors (IAP), Justice Minister Tseng Yung-fu, Huang Shyh-ming (黃世銘), Prosecutor-General, Yen Da-ho (顏大和), Taiwan Provincial Chief Prosecutor-General, and Shih Ching-tang (施慶堂), President of the Prosecutors Association of the ROC. Ninety foreign guests from more than 30 countries attended the conference, including prosecutors-general from Jordan, the Republic of Nicaragua, the Kingdom of Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates.
Justice Minister Tseng Yung-fu stated that in recent years, countries around the world have been facing threats and challenges from crimes which have become more globalized and systematic. Moreover, Tseng stated that these transnational criminal syndicates engaged in economic crimes, smuggling, money laundering, drug trafficking, and even bribery of government officials, so no country could solve the problems on its own. Therefore, prosecutors from all countries had to jointly establish channels of cooperation to thoroughly crack down on crimes, Tseng concluded.
Prosecutors Chang Chun-hui (張春暉) and Wang Chieh-tuo (王捷拓) were given special achievement awards by the IAP. Tseng Yung-fu stated that the Prosecutors Association of the ROC became a formal member of the association in 2009 under the name of Chinese Taipei Prosecutors Association, making contributions to the international community and taking responsibility for cross-border cooperation. The fact that two ROC prosecutors received IAP awards, Tseng stated, affirmed our prosecutors' efforts in investigating cross-border crimes.
James Hamilton pointed out on April 17 that the IAP, which was established in June 1995, was the first and only worldwide non-governmental organization of prosecutors, adding that he was pleased that the conference could be held in Taipei and wished the conference every success.
