President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) yesterday appointed, by Presidential decree, Steven Chen (陳士魁) Secretary-General of the Executive Yuan (Cabinet).

After former Executive Yuan Secretary-general Lin Yi-shih (林益世) had resigned over involvement in a corruption scandal, deputy secretary-general Steven Chen was acting as Secretary-General. Yesterday evening, President Ma appointed him as the new Secretary-General.

The Executive Yuan stated that Steven Chen had served in the Overseas Chinese Affairs Commission (OCAC) and in the Executive Yuan during his early career as a public functionary, adding that he also worked for the Kaohsiung City Government and Taipei City Government afterwards. He successively held the positions of director of the Department of Social Welfare and deputy secretary-general of Taipei City Government during Huang Ta-chou’s (黃大洲) tenure as Taipei City Mayor. Furthermore, after leaving the OCAC, Chen devoted himself to public causes for another 6 years, serving as Secretary-General of the Chinese Taipei Olympic Committee (中華奧會) and Secretary-General of the Red Cross Society of the Republic of China.

According to the Executive Yuan, Steven Chen took up his post as deputy minister of the Sports Affairs Council (體委會) under the Executive Yuan in 2010 and was appointed deputy Secretary-General of the Executive Yuan since February this year.
