The 6th East Asian Games are being held in Tianjin, Mainland China from October 6th-15th. Chinese Taipei athletes won 4 gold medals on the first day of the competition: weightlifter Kuo Hsing-chun (郭婞淳) in the women’s 58kg division, Wei Chen-yang (魏辰洋) in the men’s 58-63kg Taekwondo division, and the men’s and women’s team tennis events. Taiwan’s achievement tied its record for gold medals won on a single day, set in the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou. The Chinese Taipei team yesterday won 4 gold, 3 silver, and 4 bronze medals, placing 4th in the total medal count.
Chinese Taipei athletes are expected to win medals in additional events, so the number of gold medals is expected to go up. Our athletes already attained one third of the Sports Administration’s goal of 12 gold medals.
In the track and field events yesterday, Lin Chia-ying (林家瑩) won a silver medal in the women’s shot put, and Chen Chieh (陳傑) also won a silver medal in the men’s 400m hurdles. Chang Ming-huang (張銘煌), dubbed “prince of the shot put,” will compete today in the men’s shot put event. Chang has previously won four silver medals in the East Asian Games, so he vowed to do his best in capturing a gold medal this time as this is slated to be the final year of the East Asian Games.
