Taiwanese athlete Wei Chen-yang snatched a gold medal at the first World Taekwondo Grand Prix (WTGP), held at Manchester, United Kingdom from December 13-15. Taiwanese contestant Chuang Chia-chia also brought home a silver medal in the women’s category at the event.

Wei Chen-yang, who competed in the 2012 London Olympics, has been at the top of the World Taekwondo Federation Olympic rankings (in the men’s under 58 kilograms division) since last October. He made it into the WTGP’s final and beat South Korea's contestant to win the gold. By winning the WTGP’s final, Wei has added another gold medal from an international event to his award collection after taking home a gold at the East Asian Games, held in Tiangin, Mainland China, as recently as last October. Interviewed after the competition, Wei said that by winning the WTGP championship, he had achieved his last goal set for 2013. Wei and the female silver medalist Chuang Chia-chia are both taking aim at gold medals in the Asian Games, which will be held in Incheon, South Korea, in September 2014.

On the badminton court, on December 15, Taiwanese badminton player Tai Tzu-ying won the women’s singles silver medal at the Badminton World Federation Super Series (BWF Super Series), following her recent victory at the Maybank Malaysia Badminton Open early this year. Although Tai failed to snatch the top prize at the BWF Super Series, she has written Taiwan’s best record at the competition with her entry into the final. With the silver, she is expected to climb to her career-best world ranking of No.7 from No.9, giving her a firm toehold in the global badminton arena.
