In the early morning on January 25, Chang Ter-cheng, a 41-year-old truck driver, rammed his 35-ton gravel and sand truck through the main concrete marquee entrance of the Presidential Palace. Fortunately, a bulletproof gate was closed in time to stop the truck from crushing into the Palace itself, but not after it had rammed through a series of light protective barriers and careened up the steps leading to the main building, causing damage to the building’s ground floor and pillars.

President Ma Ying-jeou was not in the building when the incident occurred as he was on a state visit to Africa and Central America.

Chang Ter-cheng was injured and hospitalized, and later interrogated by the police. On February 1, the Taipei District Court rejected the prosecutors’ request for detention, ruling that Chang be released on bail of NT$300,000 and confined to his residence.

On February 13, Lee Chia-fei, Presidential Office spokesperson, stated that the Presidential Office would file a criminal complaint to the Taipei District Prosecutors Office against the truck driver over the damage to the Presidential Palace, a national historical site. In addition, Lee stated that the Presidential Office would also file a lawsuit against the driver to seek damages. According to a source within the office, the Presidential Office has spent over NT$3 million on repairs.
