Typhoon Matmo landed on Changbin, Taitung County (台東長濱) at 00:10 a.m. yesterday and moved out to sea at about 4:20 a.m. via Changhua (彰化) County. Matmo swept over Taiwan for approximately 4 hours, half of the time period that the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) had forecast. The CWB called off its land and sea warnings for Typhoon Matmo early this morning.
However, although Typhoon Matmo passed over Taiwan in only 4 hours, it still caused fatalities. Four residents in New Taipei City and Hsinchu City died in accidents related to Matmo. Still others were injured by falling objects or falling trees.
Typhoon Matmo also caused great agricultural losses in Taitung and Haulien. The typhoon left the pomelos orchards in Donghe Township, Taitung County, in a mess, with half of the pomelos falling to the ground. Nearby Haulian County also suffered from the typhoon. Agricultural losses are expected to exceed $200 million (US$6.67 million).
