Although the KMT lost the majority of the mayoral and county executive posts in the November 29th elections, the KMT won handsomely in yesterday's local council speakership elections. Among the nation's 22 council speakership positions, the KMT won 15 posts, while the DPP 3, and independent candidates 4. This includes five out of the six Special Municipalities on the first day of newly-elected local administrations throughout Taiwan.
In Taipei, the KMT's Wu Bi-chu (吳碧珠) secured a narrow victory over DPP rival Liu Yao-ren. Wu started yesterday her fifth term as Taipei's City council speaker.
In New Taipei, Chiang Ken-huang (蔣根煌) of KMT affiliation, took the speaker seat after three rounds of voting.
In Taoyuan, the KMT's Chiu I-sheng (邱奕勝) took the speaker position with 37 votes, more than half of the 60 seats in the council.
In Taichung, Lin Shi-chang(林士昌), also of the KMT, took the helm of the city council.
In Tainan, despite DPP Mayor William Lai's overwhelming victory in the mayoral race, the DPP lost the council speaker position to the KMT's Lee Chuan-chiao (李全教).
In Kaohsiung, the DPP's Kang Yu-cheng (康裕成) took the speaker position in the Green stronghold.
Women won seven of the 22 city and county council speaker positions throughout the country, a record high. They are all low-profiled and popular, which helped them gain support from both sides of the aisle. Among the seven women, six are of KMT affiliation and one DPP.
