The New Taipei City Mayor Eric Chu (朱立倫) was sworn in as KMT Chairman yesterday. He immediately fired the first salvo in KMT reforms, announcing that the Zhongshan meetings (中山會報) would not be held in the future. The Zhongshan meeting was established by former Chairman Ma Ying-jeou in 2005. Eric Chu later attended the seven-person decision-making meeting in the Presidential Office. According to the KMT, Chu would strengthen the functions of the Central Standing Committee meetings and establish his "own style" decision-making model in the future.
Chu has to deal with several urgent issues related to party reforms. Over the past 9 years, because the Zhongshan meeting was held every Tuesday, the functions of the Central Standing Committee meetings every Wednesday were weakened as a result, which caused dissatisfaction among some members of the Central Standing Committee. According to an informed source, these members would refuse to be rubber stamps in the future and called on the one-man decision-making process to be reformed, while strengthening the function of the Central Standing Committee and establishing models for collective decision-making.
In the future, a party/government platform would lead the trilateral relationship among the KMT, the central government, and the Legislative Yuan. The platform would include Monday's seven-member Presidential decision-making group, Wednesday's Central Stranding Committee meetings, and meetings of the above-mentioned party/government platform held for various important policies. According to another source, Chairman Chu's views on significant policies would be given more emphasis in the future, showing that a new KMT leadership has been gradually taking shapes.
