Hung: Political Leaders Should Tell the Truth on Nuclear Policy

Source: All Taipei Newspapers

July 27, 2015

The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) on July 24th carried an article in its Opinion Review and Outlook page, opining that "Taiwanese leaders across the political spectrum are playing to popular but shortsighted anti-nuclear fervor." The article also stated that" Tsai Ing-wen of the opposition Democratic Progressive Party supported nuclear power a decade ago, as Taiwan's vice premier, but no longer." In response, DPP spokesperson Juan Chao-hsiung (阮昭雄) stated yesterday that Tsai, the then vice premier, implemented the Legislative Yuan's resolution at that time. The claim that Tsai Ing-wen "supported nuclear power a decade ago, as Taiwan's vice premier" was not true, Juan stated.

KMT Presidential candidate Hung Hsiu-chu (洪秀柱) stated yesterday that political leaders should sincerely tell people the truth about how Taiwan could maintain a reliable energy supply. Hung went on to criticize some people for advocating a non-nuclear policy by pandering to populism without confronting the fact that Taiwan's electricity supply would be unstable without nuclear power. That was very irresponsible. Hung stressed that her energy policy was to steadily reduce the dependence on nuclear power only if affordable alternatives proved viable.
