Former Keelung City Council Speaker Sentenced to 20 Years in Prison for Corruption

Former Keelung City Council speaker Huang Ching-tai (黃景泰) was convicted on of 109 counts, including corruption and embezzlement of public funds, and was handed a 20-year prison sentence and deprived of his political rights for four years by the Keelung District Court on August 28.
The court found Huang guilty of violating the Anti-Corruption Act (貪污治罪條例), bribery, influence peddling, accepting kickbacks and other unlawful activities.
Huang stated that he would appeal the verdict.
The KMT nominated Huang, 49, in the Keelung mayoral race last year. However, because of his alleged involvement of corruption, the KMT decided to withdraw his nomination. Huang then ran unsuccessfully as an independent candidate in the election.
