Lien Chan(連戰), a former ROC Vice President and a former KMT chairman, met with Yu Zhengsheng(俞正聲), chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) yesterday in Beijing. Lien stated that the KMT's war efforts in 22 major battles on the main battlefields delivered debilitating blows to the invading Japanese army, adding that the CCP's war efforts behind enemy lines also made important contributions to the victory in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression. Lien repeatedly said, "This is an ironclad historical fact."
Lien stated that the victory over the Japanese invaders helped the Chinese nation to gain an equal footing with the major western powers, adding that therefore, both sides of the Strait should provide top-quality care to the army veterans still living.
During the meeting with Yu, Lien stated that the only purpose of his visit to Beijing was to attend the commemorative events to mark the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II and the victory in China's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression. Lien went on to say, "we all share memories of past history as a motivation so as to move the nation forward, adding that the mistake of Japan's aggression could be forgiven, but the facts of history and Japan's acts of atrocity should never been forgotten.
Yu stated that both the KMT's war efforts on the main battlefields and the CCP's war efforts behind enemy lines made important contributions to the victory in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, adding that all Chinese people, including Taiwan compatriots, made huge sacrifices.
Lien also toured Beijing's "Museum of the War of Chinese People's Resistance Against Japanese Aggression." Dr. and Mrs. Lien spent more than one hour in the museum, but did not make any comments during their tour. However, Lien wrote the following words on the guest book, "A history of blood and tears for 14 years eventually won the name of awakened lion for eternity."
The "A history of blood and tears for 14 years" refers to the period starting from the Mukden Incident in 1931 to Japan's surrender at the end of World War II in 1945.
Yesterday evening, Chen Yunlin (陳雲林), a former chairman of the Mainland's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS), hosted a banquet in Lien's honor. According to Chang Jung-kung (張榮恭), a former KMT deputy secretary-general, who accompanied Lien on the trip and attended the banquet, Lien stated that the people of Taiwan had organized a 30,000-strong volunteer army to fight against Japanese aggression in 1895. During the period when Japan occupied Taiwan (1895-1945), Lien stated that people had repeatedly taken actions against Japanese rule, and Japan had sentenced more than 800 Taiwanese to death on account of their anti-Japanese activities. Countless civilians on Taiwan had lost their lives or languished in prison for fighting the Japanese, Lien concluded.
