KMT CSC Supports Lien amid Controversy over Attending Beijing Parade

Lien Chan (連戰), a former ROC Vice President and a former KMT chairman, sparked a controversy by attending the Mainland’s events in Beijing commemorative of the 70th anniversary of victory in China’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression. Some in the KMT proposed that Lien’s case be referred to the KMT's Evaluation and Discipline Committee (EDC). However, members on the KMT Central Standing Committee (CSC), the highest organ during recess of the Party National Congress and the Central Committee, in a regular weekly meeting yesterday, overwhelmingly defended Lien, saying that Lien had contributed to cross-Strait peace, so they hoped that the KMT would not take up the matter, otherwise, party unity would be undermined.

Some in the KMT also called for referral to the EDC of similar cases related to Lin Feng-cheng (林豐正), a former KMT vice chairman, Chang Jung-kung (張榮恭), a former KMT deputy secretary-general, and Lee Chuan-hung (李傳洪), a member of the presidian of the Central Advisor Committee, as they had accompanied Lien Chan to attend the commemorative event in Beijing as well. However, no one in the KMT had formally introduced such a motion.

At the start of the Central Standing Committee regular weekly meeting yesterday, KMT Chairman Eric Chu (朱立倫) stated that the KMT’s stance remained the same: KMT cadres should not have attended the Mainland’s grand parade. Chu added, “Whether KMT elders’ cases should be referred to the Evaluation and Discipline Committee, I respect the party mechanism.”
