KMT chairman Chu: Leaders’ summit positive for cross-strait peace

KMT Chairman Eric Chu said a summit between President Ma Ying-jeou and mainland CCP Chairman Xi Jinping is absolutely positive to peaceful development of cross-strait ties and cooperation.

Speaking in a seminar in Tainan on November 4, Chu told the city’s KMT councilors that the KMT is a rational and moderate party, whose policy to bridge cross-strait peace is correct for Taiwan. The Ma-Xi summit to be held in Singapore on November 7 would certainly benefit Taiwan and the two sides of the Taiwan Strait, he added.

“Coming together in the 21st Century, there is no need for the two sides to continue their ideological differences and political rivalry. The KMT is a rational party and each policy it proposes is truly for the love of Taiwan,” Chu said.

Lin Yi-hua, director of the KMT’s Culture and Communications Committee, said the leaders’ summit is an important breakthrough in cross-strait relations, thanks to the long-term efforts of the KMT in promoting bilateral relations.

She said based on the “1992 consensus,” the KMT has worked hard to ease cross-strait confrontation and promote peace, but DPP chairperson Tsai Ing-wen has been reluctant to clarify her stand on cross-strait relations. If Tsai does not want to follow the cross-strait policy adopted by the KMT, she must tell the public exactly what she is in mind, Lin noted.

Meanwhile, Chu is planning a US visit to exchange views with senior officials there on Taipei-Washington ties, including Taiwan’s efforts to join the US-proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership trade bloc, and the Trade and Investment Framework Agreement. He will also discuss with US officials on ways to steadily develop culture, economic, and political ties between the two countries.

During his week-long visit to begin from November 10, he will tell Washington about his view on future direction of cross-strait relations and to assure the US that the KMT will never be a troublemaker in cross-strait ties.
