KMT presidential candidate names former labor minister as his running mate

                                             November 18, 2016

Kuomintang Chairman and presidential candidate Eric Chu has named former labor minister Wang Ju-hsuan (Jennifer Wang) as his running mate in the 2016 presidential election.

The decision was made out of the consideration that the 54-year-old lawyer has long fought for the rights of woman, the underprivileged, equality of both genders and labor benefits, Chu said in a news conference after a KMT Central Standing Committee meeting on November 18.

During her four-and-a-half-year tenure as labor minister since May 20, 2008, Wang, who was then 46 years old, worked hard for the rights and interests of workers, notably in the areas of labor annuity, labor fund, nursing leave, basic wage increases and other labor benefits, Chu said, adding all her efforts have won wide public recognition.

He said after Wang stepped down as the labor minister (September, 2012), she has continued to fight for the rights of the underprivileged since then. Chu said he believes Wang’s background is complementary to his own financial and economic experience.

Chu said if elected, he will concentrate in improving the domestic economy and promoting cross-strait peace, while Wang will play an important role in boosting the public perception of the government’s efforts in battling the economy and fighting for the rights of the underprivileged, woman, and workers.

Wang said in the same news conference that she was struggling over whether to be Chu’s running mate when approached. She finally decided to take the challenge all because she believes people in Taiwan deserved to be treated better and any sacrifices she has to make will be worth it.

A native of Changhua in central Taiwan, Wang, who has no party affiliation, was brought up from a working class family. She studied law at National Taiwan University, Fu Jen Catholic University and Renmin University of China.
