Number of Mainland Tour Groups to Taiwan Declines Sharply

The number of Mainland tour groups to Taiwan has declined sharply in the run-up to Taiwan’s January 16 Presidential Election. Hotels in Taitung, Eastern Taiwan, have reported that occupancy rates have declined by 40% to 50%. The number of Mainland tour groups the Shilin Night Market (士林夜市) in Taipei has also declined by 50% compared to last month.
Travel agency operators in Taitung reported that due to the sharp decline in the number of Mainland tour groups, parking lots near the Zhiben Hot Spring in Taitung County which were usually filled with tour buses were now half empty.
The number of Mainland tour groups visiting Kaohsiung City has also declined by 50% compared to last month.
