 Hung: KMT-CCP Forum to Seek Solution to Cross-Strait Stalemate

The KMT-CCP forum will be held from November 2 to 3 in Beijing. KMT Chairperson Hung Hsiu-chu (洪秀柱) is expected to meet with Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party, on November 1 when she visits Beijing for the forum. 

Yesterday, Hung met with members of the KMT legislative caucus. She stated that holding the forum would present an opportunity to extricate the nation from the current cross-Strait deadlock, adding that the party’s responsibility was to lead the public, instead of following the crowd. 

KMT legislators requested that Hung refer to the “1992 Consensus/one China, different interpretations (一中各表)” and “the Republic of China (ROC)” when meeting with Xi Jinping. Hung replied that she would take their opinions into consideration and “express the most appropriate views on such issues” during the upcoming Hung-Xi meeting. 

Hung explained that the KMT had made several important achievements over the past 8 years, such as the Five Points of Consensus reached by then KMT Chairman Lien Chan and CCP General Secretary Hu Jintao, as well as former President Ma Ying-jeou’s consistent statements on “1992 Consensus/one China, different interpretations” throughout his administration (2008-2016), adding that a cross-Strait peace accord was the final milestone which the KMT aspired to accomplish. Hung stated that although the KMT was in the opposition now, the party was still willing to study the feasibility of working towards a peace agreement across the Strait during the forum. She stressed that the KMT would wage war against the Taiwan independence plank in the DPP Charter with the KMT’s cross-Strait peace party platform. 

Some KMT legislators recommended that Hung repeat the phrases “1992 Consensus/one China, different interpretations” and “the ROC” as often as possible while visiting the Mainland. The KMT Culture and Communications Committee noted that Hung’s understanding of the “1992 Consensus” indeed included the concept of “one China, different interpretations,” so solidifying the “1992 Consensus” would uphold the principle of “one China, different interpretations.” 

Hau Lung-bin (郝龍斌), one of the KMT’s Vice Chairmen, came to Hung’s defense, declaring that Hung would clearly state the fact that “the ROC exists” and reiterate the KMT’s consistent stance on cross-Strait relations during her visit to the Mainland.
