Following the closing ceremony of the Cross-Strait Peaceful Development Forum yesterday, the Mainland announced 41 key projects involving cross-Strait exchanges which could be categorized under the areas of culture, internship, employment, scientific research, and sports. This year, the Mainland not only extended and expanded activities already in place but also added some new projects targeting students and young scholars in Taiwan.
The Mainland will offer 260 college teaching positions to scholars from Taiwan. For instance, Fujian Province will hire about 200 full-time college teachers from Taiwan. Universities in Guangdong Province, including Guangzhou University, Sun Yat-sen University, and South China University of Technology, will also recruit about 60 scholars from Taiwan.
In addition, the Mainland-based Natural Science Foundation of China and Fujian Province co-established a joint fund to promote cross-Strait cooperation in science and technology. In 2007, they will provide a fund totaling RMB$ 48.75 million (US$ 7.2 million) and scholars from Taiwan will be able to apply for grants from the Mainland as participants in the projects. Moreover, a “Taiwan Youth Project” aims to invite young scholars from Taiwan to visit the institutes under the Mainland’s Chinese Academy of Sciences to cooperate on 6- to 12-month research projects.
To increase Taiwan youth’s identification with Chinese culture, Beijing, Shanghai, Jiangsu, and Shaanxi Provinces will offer summer internship programs for young people from Taiwan at Mainland's National Center for the Performing Arts, the Capital Museum, and the Shaanxi History Museum.
