KMT Party Whip Liao: KMT Needs a Younger Leader to Take the Helm
Source: United Daily News December 30, 2016
The KMT Central Standing Committee last Wednesday decided that party chairmanship election would be held on May 20 next year. KMT Vice Chairman Hau Lung-bin (郝龍斌) yesterday discussed his ideal KMT chairperson, saying that the future KMT chairperson must be able to accept new ideas and stand with young people. Meanwhile, KMT party whip Liao Kuo-tung (廖國棟) urged former Vice President Wu Den-yih (吳敦義) and KMT caucus whip Johnny Chiang (江啟臣) to run for KMT chairmanship.
Hau stated that the KMT was facing many problems, so anyone who wanted to be the leader of the largest opposition party should be able to solve problems and galvanize a consensus, both within the party and society.
When asked by media, Liao stated that many KMT legislators, including himself, had urged Wu Den-yih to run for the KMT chairmanship, but Wu was not forthcoming with a response.
Liao stated, “More and more people within the KMT caucus have expressed the hope that the KMT could choose a young leader. Johnny Chiang is a popular candidate. A young leader will give the KMT a new image and bring more opportunities. However, the question is how to convince elders within the party that it is important for them to pass the baton to the younger generation.”
Liao went on to say, “It is unconvincing if one uses small tricks to gain the throne. Under such circumstances, the organization would be flimsy. No wonder many friends have expressed concerns that the KMT will follow in the footsteps of the New Party.”
When asked whether or not he would join the next KMT chairmanship election, Johnny Chiang stated that truthfully, he had not considered the idea at the moment.
