A super Go player, only known for the user name “Master”, has been making huge waves by beating dozens of the world’s top Go players, including players from Mainland China, Japan, Taiwan and South Korea on Chinese online board game platforms in recent weeks, stunning the Go world. After winning 53 games, the mysterious player with an ID name of “Master” defeated a group of players including Taiwan’s Chou Chun-hsun(周俊勳), Mainland China’s Nie Wei-ping(聶衛平) and Chang Hao(常昊) etc. on January 4, racking up 60 straight wins.

Everybody was guessing about the identity of the mysterious player who caused a stir in the world of the complex strategy game Go. After the 59th win on January 4, “Master” came forward to identify himself as Dr. Shijie Huang from AlphaGo, the artificial-intelligence program created by Google's London-based AI firm, DeepMind.

Some fellow players in Mainland China have a hunch that “Master” is not a human player but an updated version of AlphaGo. China News Service(中新社) indicated that the registered data of Master on Tencent board game platform showed that Master was a South Korean player of 9-dan rank, adding that the nationality was different from the previous AlphaGo. In addition, Google has not responded to the statement that “Master” is an updated version of AlphaGo to date.
