The Tsai Government Forgot Its Raison d'Être in the Interest of Its Party

United Daily News Editorial (Taipei, Taiwan, ROC)

 February 13, 2017

 Translation of an Except

Recently, the Cabinet has made a small-scale reshuffle. Health and Welfare Minister Lin Tzou-yien (林奏延), who had not been a target of negative criticism in the conduct of his duties, was suddenly replaced. Later it was leaked that the principal reason his stepping down was that when he pushed for the trial run of the long-term care version 2.0, among the nine counties and cities he selected for the pilot project, five were not administered by the Democratic Progressive Party. This sparked the dissatisfaction of the President and other DPP-administered county and city chiefs; for this reason, he was sacked. A ruling party was so mindful of this trivia and believed this was not in conformity with the principle of “Green governance, Green comes first.” This also reveals that the Tsai government’s style of "narrow-minded party politics" could no longer be covered up.

On the surface, compared with Chen Shui-bian, Tsai seemed to be more cool-minded. In fact, in handling affairs between Blue and Green, as well as between internal and external, her "discrimination", we are afraid, seemed even more apparent. Both Ma Ying-jeou and Chen Shui-bian vowed to be "President of all people." Although they did not succeed, at least they maintained such a goal. In the first year of the Tsai administration, she has directly entered a stance of party politics; her vow of "modesty" has dissipated in the wind.
