Six Candidates Register in KMT Chairmanship Race
Source: Central News Agency
April 19, 2017
The registration of candidates for the Kuomintang chairmanship election, slated for May 20, was closed yesterday. Six candidates, i.e. former KMT legislator Pan Wei-kang (潘維剛), former Vice President Wu Den-yih (吳敦義), KMT Vice Chairman Hau Lung-bin (郝龍斌), former KMT Vice Chairman Steve Chan (詹啟賢), Han Kuo-yu (韓國瑜), a former general manager of Taipei Agricultural Products Marketing Co., and incumbent KMT Chairwoman Hung Hsiu-chu (洪秀柱) have all submitted their required endorsements and registered to contest the KMT chairmanship.
The number of endorsements required is 13,322, a minimum of 3% of the KMT membership. Except Han, the other five registered candidates submitted over 100,000 endorsements. A total of 720,000 endorsements were collected from party members, far exceeding the total membership of 478,000. It means that many members signed more than one endorsement.
In order to avoid double endorsements, the Chairmanship Election Supervisory Committee will review the validity of the endorsements. In addition, the committee is slated to hold a meeting to review candidates’ qualifications and officially make public the list of eligible candidates on April 21.
