On August 25, Chinese Taipei’s badminton team, led by top-seeded Tai Tzu-ying (戴資穎), won the gold medal in the badminton mixed team event at the 2017 Taipei Summer Universiade, beating Japan 3-0 in the best-of-five final with victories by Lee Yang (李洋) and Lee Jhe-huei (李哲輝) in the men's doubles, Tai in the women's singles, and Wang Tzu-wei (王子維) in the men's singles.
In the men's javelin throw final on August 26, Cheng Chao-tsun (鄭兆村) clinched the gold medal with a throw of 91.36 meters. Cheng not only set a new Universiade record but also broke the previous Asian record of 89.15 meters set by the Mainland athlete Zhao Qinggang (趙慶剛) in 2014, becoming the first Asian javelin thrower to surpass the 90-meter mark. Meanwhile, Cheng’s record-breaking throw at the Universiade even surpassed the distances thrown by the gold medalists in the men’s javelin throw event at the 2016 Rio Olympics and the 2017 IAAF World Championships in London.
On August 27, Chen Kui-ru (陳奎儒) claimed the silver medal after finishing the men’s 110-meter hurdles with a time of 13.55 seconds, breaking the ROC national record of 13.57 set by Yang Wei-ting (楊尉廷) at the 2017 National Intercollegiate Athletic Games in May.
As of August 27, Chinese Taipei has so far garnered a total of 63 medals, i.e. 17 gold, 26 silver and 20 bronze medals, ranking third overall in the medal standings, behind Japan (30, 20, 28) and South Korea (27, 18, 26).
