DPP Must Face Xi Jinping’s New Era

China Times Editorial (Taipei, Taiwan, ROC)

April 5, 2017

 Translation of an Excerpt

After the CCP’s 19th National People’s Congress, cross-Strait relations will soon march to a new strategic turning point, no longer handling the issues arising out of the people-to-people exchanges between Taiwan and the Mainland, and no longer for wrestling over the essence of cross-Strait political divergences between Taipei and Beijing, but for truthfully and fundamentally concerning the destiny of Taiwan’s existence, which is the inescapable top priority.

The power of Mainland leader Xi Jinping has now approached the apex, daring to plan for a future exceeding two five-year terms, even planning for the great renaissance and China dream which chronologically surpasses his personal life time; Xi Jinping’s "new era" is very long, straddling 3 decades. As the leader, both in name and substance, Xi Jinping’s policy guidance is unshakable and cannot be ignored.

During last week’s symposium titled “Retrospect and Prospects on the 30th Anniversary of Cross-Strait Exchanges,” President Tsai delivered remarks, urging the two ruling parties to “lay down their political baggage and develop benign dialogue, for the welfare of the people across the Strait.” We sincerely hope that DPP members have listened to the words of their party chairwoman, facing the energetic rise of the Mainland at the moment, carefully ponder, as a ruling party, liberate themselves from the old ideology that could not cope with the changes in the situation and that could put the people of Taiwan in peril.

We also want to urge President Tsai to personally take the lead in exhibiting the “traditional political wisdom of ‘all things considered’ and the ‘middle way,’” bravely break through, ponder and propose a new model and a new framework with cross-Strait characteristics to create a new situation not only for compatriots of Taiwan, but also for the next "new era" of 30 years belonging to both sides of the Strait.
