Beginning next Tuesday (April 3rd), Reactor No. 1 of Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) No. 3 will undergo its annual comprehensive maintenance for 45 days. Currently, because Reactor No. 1 of NPP No. 2 is the only operational reactor as Reactor No. 2 tripped yesterday. Taiwan would have only two nuclear reactors in operation, should Reactor No. 2 fail to function soon.
Staff from NPP No. 3 explained that Taipower (台電) had originally planned to restart Reactor No. 2 of NPP No. 2 during the above mentioned annual maintenance, the power supply would be adequate under normal circumstances. However, Reactor No. 2 of NPP No. 2 tripped yesterday, begetting potential pressure on NPP No. 3, the same source said.
Economics Minister Shen Rong-jin (沈榮津) yesterday indicated that after Taipower submitted a report explaining why Reactor No. 2 of NPP No. 2 tripped, the Ministry would decide whether or not it would be restarted before summer, conceding that the operating reserve ratio of summer’s power supply was relatively low.
