Historic High in Power Consumption: Blackout Hits Miaoli
Source: United Daily News
May 31, 2018
As temperatures soared, the power consumption in Taiwan reached 36.77 million kW at 1:50 p.m. yesterday, hitting a historic high. Yesterday’s peak power demand again triggered an “orange alert light” for power supply, signifying that operating reserves had fallen below 6%.
Although the Economic Ministry pledged that there would be no power shortages this summer, an unexpected power outage occurred in the Miaoli area yesterday afternoon, leaving more than 70,000 households without electricity for one and half hours. This also marked the seventh large-scale power outage within half a month.
Hsu Tsao-hua (徐造華), spokesman of the Taiwan Power Company (Taipower), pointed out that the power outage in Miaoli this time was mainly a result of an ultra high voltage line bus failure in the Tongxiao Power Plant, which had nothing to do with the peak power demand.
