It’s Queer for the People Not to "Betray" Such a Gov’t

China Times Editorial (Taipei, Taiwan)

June 22, 2018

 Translation of an Excerpt

"If one betrays others first, what qualifications does one have to demand that the other party remain faithful?" This remark in fact not only applies to married couples and friends, but aren’t the relationships between governments and the people any different after all?

The Tsai Ing-wen government has been in office for two years; it insists on not accepting the 1992 consensus, not recognizing that two sides of the Strait belong to one China, denying Chinese identity from education policies and cultural policies, and leading young people to fundamentally grow alienated from the Mainland, constricting cross-Strait relations and widening cross-Strait barriers, creating tensions in cross-Strait relations, and heightening a sense of mutual hostility. However, at the same time as the Tsai government created "alienation" and "hostility," a phenomenon of goodwill towards the Mainland exceeding unfavorability appeared in the vox populi in Taiwan. It may be said that this is Taiwan people’s “betrayal” toward the DPP’s Tsai government, and moreover, an “out of the ordinary betrayal” of the young and middle-aged groups toward the hardcore faith of the DPP.

The increase in the degree of goodwill towards the Mainland also indicates Taiwan people’s affirmation of the Mainland’s international political and economic status, and development capabilities. From the fact that more and more young people from Taiwan are willing to seek development on the Mainland, it may be perceived that in the eyes of the Taiwan people, the Mainland is not the “threat” shaped by the DPP government, but rather it is an “opportunity” that can be seized for development.

What the people want is a government that can bring the people sustenance, development, and glory, and not a ruler who wants to realize his/her narrow-minded ideologies. The opinion poll this time is reminding the Tsai government, “Please bear in mind Taiwan people's safety and welfare; do not unwittingly betray Taiwan.”
