"Pinning a Pro-Red Label” Is the Green Camp’s Perennial Nipple or Panacea

United Daily News Editorial (Taipei, Taiwan)

 Translation of an Excerpt

If people notice certain keywords appearing in the electoral campaign news, such as "external forces," "external funds," or more directly "Mainland funds," "Wu Sangui [the Ming Dynasty general who guarded the fortress and gate of the Great Wall section facing Manchuria, but decided to let in the Manchu troops, leading to the downfall of the Ming Dynasty, hence, generally referred to as a traitor],” "Mainland netizen army," etc., they would understand that the Green camp is again beginning to use the "pinning the pro-Red label” card.

What's more, a certain Green camp journalist exclaimed loudly on political talk shows, claiming that the "Han Kuo-yu vogue" was precisely the "Wu Sangui phenomenon." The journalist also clenched Han Kuo-yu and attacked him, saying that Han’s declaration of striving for the economy would “increase Kaohsiung’s population to five million in ten years," and accusing Han Kuo-yu that he precisely wanted to let in the hordes of Mainland Chinese to "cleanse Taiwan." This kind of approach is not brand new, but the Green camp apparently loves it as a hobby, and has no way of breaking the addiction, hence, using it over and over again.

In July, Lu Shiow-yen was the victim of the same tactic of “pinning the pro-Red label.” At that time, Lien Chan was about to travel to the Mainland to meet with Xi Jinping; he first went to Taichung to stump for Lu Shiow-yen. Who knew, Lee Tien-sheng, the DPP caucus whip in the Taichung City Council, would immediately spout loud accusations, questioning that Lien Chan wanted to let in "Mainland funds" in an effort to help Lu Shiow-yen’s campaign.

"Pinning the pro-Red label" used to be the Green camp’s panacea that worked wonders, but times and circumstances have changed. When the DPP’s tactics were seen through, this panacea looked like its "perennial nipple." The era in which the DPP could rely only on “pinning the pro-Red label” and anti-Mainland China policy has passed, and the perennial nipple should be discarded.
